Flax is really two crops in one plant (Linum usitatissimum), grown in two different climates for two value chains that barely overlap. Fibre flax is grown tall and dense for the long bast fibres in its stem, and it is the only raw material for linen: linen is by definition the cloth woven from flax fibre. Oilseed flax, or linseed, is grown shorter and branchier for its seed, which is crushed for linseed oil (paints, varnishes, wood finish, and the "lin" in linoleum) and increasingly eaten as an omega-3 health food.
The geography splits the same way. Premium fibre flax is astonishingly concentrated: a damp maritime belt through northern France (Normandy), Belgium, and the Netherlands grows on the order of 80 percent of the world's long flax fibre, because that cool, humid climate is ideal for retting, the controlled rotting in the field that loosens the fibre from the stalk. France is the largest producer and exporter, and most of the raw fibre is then shipped to China to be spun and woven. Oilseed flax is a different, drier-climate crop of the steppes and prairies: Kazakhstan is now the world's largest grower, ahead of Russia, Canada, China, and India.
Neither is a big market, and neither has a meaningful futures contract. Linen is well under 1 percent of world textile fibre, dwarfed by cotton and synthetics, and linseed is a minor oilseed beside soybeans, palm, rapeseed, and sunflower. Flaxseed futures once traded in Winnipeg but withered, so flax is a physically traded, premium, regional crop, the profile of a real commodity that financialisation never reached. Its swings come from European harvest weather, Chinese demand for linen, the paint and linoleum cycle for linseed oil, and the health-food appetite for omega-3 seed.
