A renewable energy certificate represents the environmental attributes of one megawatt hour of renewable electricity, separated from the power itself so it can be sold on its own. It is what actually backs a "100 percent renewable" or "green power" claim: buying and retiring a REC is how a company says the electricity it used was clean. In the US it is the REC; in Europe the Guarantee of Origin (GO); in the UK the REGO.
There are two demand streams. Compliance RECs satisfy state Renewable Portfolio Standards, including solar-specific SRECs, and are bounded by an alternative-compliance-payment ceiling; state SRECs (New Jersey is the active example) have traded in the hundreds of dollars. Voluntary RECs back corporate clean-power claims and are far cheaper, a few dollars each; in 2024 US voluntary REC volume overtook compliance volume for the first time, a market worth on the order of 1.7 billion dollars. European GOs swung from near zero to about ten euros and back during the energy crisis.
RECs trade brokered and over the counter, tracked and retired in regional registries (PJM-GATS, WREGIS, M-RETS in the US; the AIB hubs in Europe), with some listed futures (for example ICE New Jersey SREC futures) but thin volume against the OTC market. They are the tradeable link between the power market and corporate climate claims.
